Key Windows Updates, March 2026

Beginning March 18, 2026, CNU will start migrating Windows devices to Microsoft Intune. Intune will enhance the security of your devices, provide you with better self-service options, and make it easier for your device to receive updates. This rollout will occur in phases over several weeks.

Most of this transition happens quietly in the background. No data will be lost, and your files, bookmarks, and applications will stay intact.

Most qualifying computers will receive the Windows 11 25H2 update automatically, subject to hardware compatibility.

Before the Update

When your computer is ready for the update, you’ll see the standard Windows Update notification in your system tray.

You’ll also see options in your Start Menu when you attempt to shut down or restart the computer.

Start Menu update options

Clicking on the ones that include the word “Update” will start the update process.

If you don’t manually start the update within 3 days, your computer will automatically restart and install the updates.

To ensure the update goes smoothly, please take the following actions once you see the notification:

  • Save your work: Save all open work before leaving for the day, as the update may install overnight or upon restart.

  • Power and Connectivity: If using a laptop, ensure it is plugged into power and connected to the CNU network (wired or Wi-Fi).

  • Stay Powered On: Do not shut down your computer if you see a pending update notification.

During the Update

  • Timing: The update typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

  • Appearance: You may see a blue screen with a progress indicator and the device may restart multiple times. Do not power off the device manually during this process.

25H2 Installing
During installation, Windows Update will present as shown here.

After downloading and installing, you will be prompted to restart.

After the Update

After the update, some things will be noted:

  • Login: Log in as usual; your desktop and applications will be exactly as you left them.

  • Visuals: You may notice minor visual changes in the Start Menu and taskbar, but functionality remains the same.

  • Hardware Eligibility: Not all devices qualify for 25H2. If your device does not receive the update, no action is needed; you will continue to receive security updates on your current version.

  • Company Portal is the new self-service tool for installing IT-approved software, replacing previous self-service methods. You can find it by searching "Company Portal" in the Windows toolbar or Start Menu.

IMPORTANT: Device Access Notifications

During the rollout, you may see a notification stating your "device cannot access company resources." This is a known artifact of the rollout process and can be safely ignored. It will resolve automatically, and no action is required on your part.

Software updates for common applications (browsers, productivity tools, and security software)will now be managed automatically through Intune.

  • Updates happen in the background without disruption.

  • If an application must close to update, you will receive a notification. Save your work and allow the update to proceed.
