Classroom AV Troubleshooting, SERC/MCM 1st Floor

Note: This document is referring to the AV setup present on the first floor of McMurran and the new Science and Engineering Research Center. For classrooms in Forbes Hall, Luter Hall, and McMurran hall (second floor or higher), faculty may need to refer to an alternate document here.

The following are common problems that may be experienced when using CNU’s AV systems, alongside some possible solutions.

While these solutions may solve the problem much of the time, it is possible that the issue you are facing will not be resolved after taking them into account. If you try the solutions mentioned here and are still having issues, please reach out to the Helpdesk at (757)594-7079. If you are currently trying to teach, mention that you are in class and a technician will be sent to you immediately.

Problem: The screen is black, and pressing different items on the touch panel doesn't do anything

  • The most common reason you see this behavior is the person who used the AV equipment before you turned either froze or blanked the video. To turn these features off, locate the labeled buttons under Display Control. If they are highlighted, tap them to turn them off.

Problem: No Sound is Coming from the Classroom Speakers

The first thing you should check is that the system isn't muted at the touch panel.

If that doesn't work, the computer may have selected an incorrect audio output.

Changing Audio Output on Windows

To change the output, click the volume icon in the taskbar. Then, click the settings icon (shaped like a gear) at the top to change outputs.

Sound Output

Choose the one including "NV-32-H-1" and the audio should go through the classroom speakers.

Problem: The monitor is displaying icons, but the projector is not.

  • The lectern display has been switched to "Extend" mode.  To switch it back, hold down the Windows Key and P key on your keyboard to automatically pull up a menu with basic display settings.

  • Change the selection to "Duplicate these displays."

Problem: The document camera is not displaying or is frozen

  • Double-check that the document camera is on by pressing the power button on the camera.  A green light will be lit if it's on.

Problem: I need to access something in the cabinet, but it's locked, and I don't have a key

The lecterns are supposed to be kept locked at all times. The keys for these rooms is unique, and if you have been issued a lectern key for another type of room on campus that key will not work. If you have a specific need to access the technology stored in the lectern cabinet (ex. playing a Blu-Ray in class), you can get a key issued by submitting a ticket via help.cnu.edu to request key training.  Unlocking lecterns for others or giving your key to others is prohibited.
