Restriction of TikTok on University Networks and Devices

This article outlines the restriction of access of the TikTok application and website, along with other services from ByteDance Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. on Christopher Newport networks and devices. This action is taken in compliance with directives issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia regarding cybersecurity risks.

Standard:

In accordance with the Code of Virginia, use of and access to the TikTok application and website is prohibited on:

  • Any university-owned or managed device (desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones).

  • The university's network infrastructure (including wired connections and all campus Wi-Fi networks, such as eduroam or CNU-Guest Wi-Fi networks).

This standard applies to all users of University networks and University-owned devices, including faculty, staff, and outside contractors. This does not apply to personal devices, as long as said devices are not connected to CNU networks.

Compliance:

Attempts to circumvent these technical restrictions on university networks or devices may constitute a violation of university Acceptable Use Policies.
