By default, students are able to upload submissions to assignments without you doing anything.  If you want to add explanatory text, such as instructions for what the student should be submitting, click inside the text box provided. The box will convert into a space similar on other content items, allowing you to insert text, video, files, or other useful media for the assignment.

Assignment Instructions

The assignment settings are on the right.  Just click any of them, or the gear icon at the top right, to view or edit all settings.

Set the due date at the top. You can also use this setting to prohibit late submissions, prevent your students from starting an attempt after the due date, allow class conversations, collect submissions offline, or turn off the due date entirely for an assignment.

Scroll down and you can set the grading options.:

  • You can change the Grade Center category to place the assignment in, which is useful if you need to separate different kinds of assignments into different categories for your grade weighting process.

  • In addition, you can give the student multiple or unlimited attempts to submit the assignment. If you do, you can also control which attempt "counts" for the grade.

  • Next, you can control whether it's graded by points, percentage or a letter grade, as well as how many points the assignment is worth.

  • You can also hide student names during grading, or post grades automatically once the assignment is graded (although the latter is not recommended.)

  • Other evaluation options are present, such as peer review or delegated grading, which are off by default as they are not relevant to the vast majority of classroom settings.

If you want students to see their SafeAssign reports, check the "Allow students to view the SafeAssign...." box.

If this is a partial or rough-draft submission and you are going to have the students submit later, you must click the "Exclude submissions..." checkbox to keep SafeAssign from marking the students' second submissions as plagiarized.

In order for students to be able to submit the assignment, you'll need to change the visibility from "Hidden from students" to "Visible to students". This dropdown is not within the settings panel, but at the very top-right of the assignment itself. It's also viewable from the Content feed without entering the assignment, making quick availability changes easier.
