Encrypting Your Email with Virtu
CNU requires emails (including attachments) containing sensitive information to be encrypted. Virtru is CNU's email encryption solution. Virtru is a free service that can be added to your email account via a Chrome browser extension. Note: Only the CNU sender must have the Virtru extension, the receipient does not need the extension.
After installing the browser extension, access your email from the same browser as normal. Upon accessing your inbox a popup will welcome you to using Virtu. Click "Activate" to activate the extension for the email address currently open, then "Done" to close the popup.
The next time you compose an email, a second popup will notify you that you can turn on Virtu protection for the email. Click "Ok" to return to email composition, and you will see an additional row of information above the To line. This row will contain a toggle allowing you to turn on Virtu's protection; click on the toggle to add encryption to the email.
Clicking the gear button will provide additional toggles with more options:
Disable Forwarding will prevent the recipient from being able to forward the email upon receipt
Expiration Date will create a limited window of time in which the recipient can decrypt and access the message
Watermarking will add a visible watermark to the message that cannot be removed
Persistent Protection ensures that the encryption remains on the message even if downloaded or shared, allowing it to remain secure in offline formats. protects files by requiring authentication even ishared or downloaded to a computer
Users who access an email encrypted with Virtu will open the email to a notification that the contents are encrypted. They will then have to verify their identity in order to view the email's contents.
