New editions of Microsoft Powerpoint have enabled a new tool–the ability to include live captions for speech delivered alongside the presentation. These captions are currently responsive to 22 spoken languages and can be delivered in up to 68.  To utilize this new tool, your computer must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be up-to-date on the most recent available version of Microsoft Office. If you are currently using an older version of Office, or currently do not have Microsoft Office installed, you can download and install it here.
  • Must have a functional microphone to pick up spoken words.

On the Slide Show ribbon, check the Always Use Subtitles option to activate subtitles when presenting. To select the spoken and subtitle languages, select the Subtitle Settings dropdown.

The spoken and Subtitle languages can then be selected separately. You will also have an option to locate the microphone the platform will use to detect spoken text.

Once you have selected the desired languages and the microphone being used, start your slide show. The captions will then generate below your presentation in real time.
