If you have a unique grading system, have class assignments in external sites, or just prefer a different grade editing environment, you may wish to download your Grade Center and work on it in Excel.  These instructions will give you the information that you need to do so.

Downloading your Gradebook

In the course, use the control panel to access the full Gradebook.

On the upper right there are a series of icons, right below the Student Preview button. Select the Download button.

On the sidebar that comes up, you can choose a number of settings:

  1. you will be able to download either the full grade center or a specific column or columns.
  2. You can also select to download the Grade History, which provides the history of changes made to individual grades.
  3. You will also be able to select the file type of the download;  select a .csv file for the file type, as there are problems importing the tab delimited (.xls) format into newer versions of Excel.

When you have chosen all your settings, click 'Download' to download the file to your computer.

Editing your Gradebook

Once you’ve downloaded your Gradebook, it’s time to edit it.

Do not change the column headers, or the file won’t import correctly.

You can also add columns at the end and they’ll be added to the Gradebook. However, they will be added as Text columns and not included in any calculations.  You’ll have to go in and change the column settings if you want them.

When you’re done with your edits, save the file.  In the Save as Type: dropdown, choose CSV or Comma Separated Values. You may get a couple of popups asking if you’re sure; choose yes.

Uploading your Edited File

Once you’ve saved your edited file, you can upload it to Scholar.  Return to your Grade Center and choose Upload.

You can either drag and drop the file, or use "Upload Local File" to upload the file onto your computer. Note that only .csv or .xls files can be uploaded for this process. but we recommend that you use .csv files, as there are current issues with .xls file uploading.

Once the file has loaded, it will appear in the sidebar, along with a summary of the changes that will be made by uploading this file onto your Gradebook. You may select or deselect any changes you wish. Once your settings are complete, click Upload and the file will be uploaded into your gradebook with all selected changes overwritten.
