In Scholar, students are only able to see courses which have been set to “available”. Courses are initially set to “unavailable” so that instructors can prepare course shells before releasing them, and to make it obvious to students which of their courses are not using any of the Blackboard functions.

In addition, some instructors may want to make a course “unavailable” at the end of the semester, or if major revisions are being made to the course. Ultra now has two options for these situations, which provide different levels of access:

  • Listing a course as "Private" will hide the course from students and make it inaccessible to them until it is opened again.
  • Listing a course as "Complete" will allow students to see the course, but prevent them from making any more submissions.

There are two ways to alter course availability.  You can use the Qwickly module at the top of your CNU Scholar main page, or the mini-menu on the course itself.

Using the Courses List

The simplest way to make your course available or unavailable is to use the locking option in your Courses list. Locked courses will have a lock icon on the front (shown below in both tile and list view). Select the three-dots icon (on the top right in tile view, in the far right in list view) and select "Open Course".

You can also make this change from inside the course in question via the Details and Actions menu. When a course is Locked, the option will read "Course is Private", along with a link that says "Students can't access this course". Clicking the link will open a mini-window that allows you to open the course to students.

Repeating this process when the course is open will provide instructors with the option to either make the course Private, or to Complete the course.

Using Qwickly

If you want to make multiple courses available at once, you can use Qwickly. It is located near the bottom of the new navigation menu, under Tools. Select Tools, then Qwickly Tools from the resulting options.

The module will open in a new tab on your browser. Select "Course Availability" from the menu provided.

Course Availability

Your courses will appear as a series of toggles. Select a toggle to switch it from active to inactive or vice versa; an available course will show the toggle in green, while an unavailable course will display it in grey.
