Transferring Photos from Google Photos
With the ending of Christopher Newport University support for Google Photos, you will need to transfer your photos out of you University Google Photos account to another Google account, another photo storage provider, or your own storage.Â
Moving to Another Google Photos Account with Partner Sharing
If you want to continue to use Google Photos, you'll need to move your photos to a personal Google Photos account. The easiest way to do this is through Partner Sharing. To set up Partner Sharing, click the gear at the top right corner of Photos.
Click Partner Sharing.
A box will pop up asking you if you want to limit to photos only after a certain date, leave that at "off". Additionally, you'll be asked whether you want to share all photos or just photos of certain people; choose All Photos.
Click Next, and you'll be asked for an e-mail address to share your photos with. Enter one associated with a personal Google account and click Next
You'll see a confirmation. Click Send Invitation, but you are not done!
You'll then receive an email at your personal Google address asking you to accept the invite. Click View Invite.
You'll then be asked to accept the invite. Click Accept.
It will then ask you if you want to share your personal photos back. Choose "Not Now"
Once you do that, you'll see the photos. In the corner you'll see "See these photos along with your own" . Click that.
In the box that pops up, choose "Save all photos" and click Done.
Moving to Another Service with Google Takeout
If you would prefer to use another service to store your photos, or if you just want to download them to your computer, you can use Google Takeout to do so.
Downloading Photos with Google Takeout
To move your photos out of Google, you'll need to download them with Google Takeout. Start by going to takeout.google.com.
*****IMPORTANT: so that you don't download everything in your Google Account, including e-mails, you MUST click "Deselect all" at the top
Scroll down to Google Photos and check that box.
Then, scroll all the way to the bottom and choose "Next step"
Double-check that only 1 item is selected.
Make sure "Transfer to:" says "Send download link via e-mail" and click Create Export.
You will be e-mailed a link when your export has completed. Click Download your Files.
On the page that comes up, click Download, and a zip file containing your photos will be downloaded to your computer.
If you want to upload to another service, you'll need to unzip the file. On Windows, right-click it and choose "Extract All"
If necessary, select a location to extract to, and click Extract.
On a Mac, just double-click the zipped file.
Importing to Amazon Photos
NOTE: Amazon Photos is not contracted, controlled, or supported by Christopher Newport University.  This information is provided solely for your convenience.
If you have a personal Amazon Photos account, you can upload your photos to that service. Go to amazon.com/photos. Then, click on Add and "Upload folder".
Double-click on the folder that you extracted, then double-click on Takeout.
Then, single-click on Google Photos to select it and click Upload.
You'll get some error notifications because your Takeout folders actually include text data that is incompatible with Amazon Photos, but your photos will be uploaded.
Importing to a Personal iCloud Account
NOTE: Personal iCloud accounts are not contracted, controlled, or supported by Christopher Newport University.  This information is provided solely for your convenience.
If you have a Mac with a personal iCloud account, you can upload your photos there. Launch the Photos app on your Mac.
Open Finder, then double-click on the Takeout folder.
Drag the Google Photos folder into your Photos app.
You'll get notified about incompatible files, but that is just because your Photos export includes additional information that isn't compatible.
The photos will by synced with iCloud.
