Create a new test in Scholar


This article is about creating a test in a Scholar Original View course. For creating tests in Ultra courses, refer to the documentation here


Creating a test in Scholar is a two-step process. You need to both create the test, and deploy it to a content area.  The easiest way to create an entirely new test is to create the point to which you’ll deploy the test, then build the test.


Setting up a Content Area Location

Select the content area you intend to use from your course menu.

In that content area, use the 'Assessments' menu. Select test.

On the ensuing page you have the option of creating a test or selecting a test. Click “Create” to build a new test.

You’ll then be taken to the test information screen.

Test Name and Description

Here, you can give your test a name, add a description of the test, and add instructions to the students.  When you’re done adding the information, click “Submit” to start building your test.

 


Adding Questions

You’ll then be taken to the Test Canvas.  To add a question, hover over “Create Question” to open the menu.

Click on one to add it.  You will be taken to the “Create/Edit Question”



The first section always allows you to enter the question text, and optionally, a title for the question.  What follows varies by question type.  

Essay and Short Answer

Both of these question types must be graded by the instructor.  You can provide an example answer in the “Answer” text box to assist in grading.  When you’ve entered the question, simply click submit.

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer and True/False

For multiple choice, multiple answer and true/false questions, you’ll be able to select the correct answer.  For true/false questions, the answers are provided for you.  For multiple choice, you enter in the answers.

In the Options section, you can choose to have the answers display randomly.  In the Answers section, enter the potential answers.

 

For both multiple choice and true/false questions, select the radio button next to the correct answer.  Multiple answer questions are identical to multiple choice questions, but you may select one or more checkboxes to indicate correct answers. When you’ve selected the correct answer,  click “Submit”.

Matching

 

Matching questions are created with answer pairs.

Enter the question in the first box, and the answer to match in the second.  You can also have multiple questions use the same answer by clicking on the “Reuse answer choice from” box, and selecting the appropriate question.  At the bottom, you can check “add unmatched chioces”  to add distractor choices.  Once you have the question set up, click “Submit.”

 

Fill in the Blank



Fill in the blank questions require the students to supply an answer which is automatically checked by Scholar. Add the answers in the Answers section:

You can add multiple possible answers by increasing the number in the “Number of Answers” dropdown. For each answer, select if it should be an exact match or if any answer containing the text is acceptable.  For more complex matches, you can select “Pattern Match” and use regular expressions.  Check the box for “Case Sensitive” if the case of the answer is important. Then, click “Submit”.

Calculated Numeric

Questions with numeric answers can be automatically graded using the Calculated Numeric question type.  Calculated Numeric questions are the same as Fill in the Blank, except they require a numeric answer:

Enter the proper numeric answer in the top field, and the amount of error you’d like to allow in the bottom.  To require exact answers, either leave the Answer Range field blank, or enter 0. Then, click “Submit”

When you’ve completed the test, click on the “OK” button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
